I painted a ceiling yesterday with Dulux matt whiite emulsion and after the first coat had dried i put the second coat on. After half an hour cracks began to appear and the paint just peeled off. Why was this and what should I do now?

Most important bit is what you did BEFORE applying the paint, ceilings condition and what finish has been applied previously!

Preperation, Preperation and Preperation. That is the most important part of the job. Brush ceiling - wipe ceiling over with damp, soapy water, then clean cloth is the MINIMUM otherwise you will simply apply the paint to dust, grease and grime and the result will be pealing paint since it has not adhered to the ceiling but above dust, grease and grime.
