|
|
Hi,
I have a problem with a router which is hardwired (ethernet) to my main PC which is fine, and I also have a laptop connected to it via a wireless connection.
The wireless connection is reporting an excellent signal and when I go into network connection properties tells me that I am connected and shows the length of time that I have been online for.
The problem being that it wont open any pages and gives the "page cannot be displayed" message.
When the laptop is hardwired it is ok.
I'm running XP.
I would appreciate any suggestions you may have.
Thanks,
Dave |

Hi Dave,
When you hardwire your laptop, is it via the same wireless router (just using an ethernet port on it instead)?
On your main pc, click start->run and type CMD. This will open a command prompt, type IPCONFIG and press enter, there should be an entry named 'Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection', make a note of the IP Address listed beneath the entry.
Keep your main PC switched on whilst you carry out the next task on your laptop.
On your laptop, which is wirelessly connected to your router, click start->run and type CMD. This will open a command prompt, type PING w.x.y.z where w.x.y.z is the IP Address you obtained from your main PC - do you see 4 responses which start off: "Reply from w.x.y.z: ..."?
Cheers, Nick |

Hi Nick,
Thanks for your reply.
Followed your instruction and received four "request timed out" messages in reply.
Also, the ping stats returned are :-
sent 4 - received 0 - lost 4 - 100% loss. |

Could you tell me what the IP address AND default gateway listed for both your ethernet connected pc and wireless connected PC's are please, they will probably start with 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x
(The time outs you witnessed tell me your wireless connected PC can't even see your ethernet pc so it would be very unlikely it could connect to the internet) |

| Hmm, they look strangely normal to me. From your wirelessly connected PC can you type PING LOCALHOST and PING 64.233.187.99, do you receive replies from either? both? |

Have you ever managed to use the wireless functionality of your router to connect to the internet? Do you have security enabled on it? I wonder whether it is blocking activity until security is switched on.. can you connect to the routers admin page via wireless? if not, can you connect via ethernet and see any options to switch on security or enable external access for wireless?
If none of the above works or only confuses then post the full make/model of router you are using and I'll have a look at the tech spec for it to see if anything obvious jumps out. |

| Well that is bizarre then. 64.233.187.99 is the IP address of www.google.com, so your wireless PC obviously has access to the internet via your router - perhaps open a web browser on your wireless PC and enter this as the web address: http://64.233.187.99 and see if google opens up |

Are you using Internet Explorer? If so, could you download and install Mozilla FireFox (http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/products/firefox/) and see if that web browser works wireless for you - the PING command you issued to the google web site tells me the communication between your laptop and the internet is ok so I am wondering if something in Internet Explorer is to blame.
If you are already using FireFox, then do you have an anti-virus, anti-spam or firewall product (other than the windows default one) installed on your laptop? I wonder whether one of them is disabling access over port 80 (this is the HTTP:// communication port) - can you try disabling them temporarily to see if internet access improves? |
