Not that its going to help I just wondered for my own good. Where is that pipe that carries on from the pump going to?

the pipe coming out the top of the pump....the first tee goes off to the motorised valve for the heating, then on to the heating circuit. The second tee goes to the motorised valve for the hot water, and then on to the connection to the coil in the hot water cylinder. The pipe then carries on vertically (and reduces) to an automatic vent (bottle type).... The pipe out of the bottom of the pump (the inlet) goes to a tee arrangement, and joins a pipe that comes, I assume, straight from the boiler (and goes up to the expansion tank in the loft as the vent), also the cold water feed is connected to this 'tee arrangement' (see third photo). Hope that is a help.

To anyone who is interested....looks like fernox treatment has done some good. expansion tank level no longer rising (it's been a week now with no change), I've balanced all the radiators, and they are all getting hot quickly (the last two cool a little when the hot water comes on, so I'm going to gag the gate valve on the hot water side in a little, to maintain flow to the heating, as per one of the suggestions in this forum). An old retired plumber I spoke to said that a lot of the old systems used to spill over from the vent, and one of the boiler manufacturers recommended that the last run of the vent pipe be enlarged to inch to compensate! I've just got to change an automatic vent that I believe is not working, and put some inhibitor in the system and hopefully I'm done (for now!).
