Hi Nick

Since my norton came up for renewal (10days) I have had 3 virus alerts yet none all year, is this a con or what Rolling Eyes

Do you know any good free jobbies

John AVG seems to have a good reputation.

I use one of their paid for versions but know several others very happy with the free version.

I must admit I haven't used an antivirus product for over a year now, I'm just extremely careful about what I open in emails, and have my internet browsers locked down as much as I can, I rely upon Spy Bot Search and Destroy to remove spyware apps every month or so (I say spyware, the worst I have had has been tracking cookies)

Before my brave decision to dump my AV product, I used AVG Free Edition which I still recommend to relatives - none of which have picked up any viruses that have got past AVG.

I liked this product because it never used to pop up nag screens or scarey messages saying I'd have to pay or it wouldn't help me anymore, and it never seemed to take up excessive amounts of computer resources whilst it was doing its thing.

A relative tells me the main difference between the free and paid for version other than the extra products provided (Anti-Spyware, Anti-Spam, Firewall) is the speed of the software update. Every day AVG automatically visits the AVG web site for updates, if you are on the free version you will see the update screen for up to a minute whilst the updates download slowly, the paid version connects you to a much faster update site.

PS. If you haven't already, I would highly recommend you get yourself a copy of SpyBot Search and Destroy (its completely free) and make sure you choose the 'immunise' option as it seriously decreases the chance of being directed to unscrupulous web sites --> http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2471
