i have a public house ceiling to decorate and it is brown with smoke badly what would be the best way to combat this

Wash it with sugar soap.

after you wash it with sugarsoap. pop down to B&Q and get a gallon [5ltrs] of REVIVE. great for holding back smoke stains. dries very fast and is ideal as a first coat, it can be used as an undercoat for all types of emulsion,vinyl silk,or vinyl matt :.....Dai Wink

Cheers mate been in b&q website and cant find that revive is it a b & q brand ?

HI, yes. it's B&Qs own brand, comes in 5ltr container and cost [here] £9.99.Should be the same price everywhere. Maybe better if you went to the store and looked under 'specialist paints'.Good luck...Dai
