I'm installing a generator with a manual transfer switch and have a couple of questions:

Given that the generator produces up to 8000 watts and the transfer switch is rated at 30amps, how long can I make the 10AWG cable between the generator and the switch? My panel is located a loooong way from the garage and I need about 80 feet. Should I really be using 8AWG wire?

Also, is there any danger in wirenutting stranded wire to solid wire? The transfer switch maker (Connecticut Electric) calls for it in their instructions, but I wasn't sure about that one. The certified electrician I had look at it didn't have any issues.

Thanks!
