| We have an old but working central ac unit. It requires 14 gauge wire. But it was recently reconnected and has to run the enitre length of the house to the breaker box. Over 60 feet. So it's not working. I'm wondering if it is wrong to connect a 6 gauge wire to this unit. Sure it would be more than needed but is that dangerous to use a bigger wire than needed. The electrician did not apparently compensate for the length of the wire which I've read is important. Thanks |

There is no problem with using a wire that is to big, if the wire is to small and run over a distance the electrician should have calculated the volt drop in the cable against the load and distance.
A moderator called 'B' is on your side of the pond and is best placed to answer you if what you have is correct as our cable sizes are different here in the UK.
