HELLO ALL:
PLEASE EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 110/230 115/240 120/208 277/480 AND SO ON....
ALSO, PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY THIS DIFFERENCE IN DESIGNATIONS IS USED.
THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Hello Dennis.
To give a brief answer to your question "designation of supplies" Normal distribution in this country at point of use is 415V three phase 240V single phase, The neutral point of a star wound transformer is earthed you therefore 240V phase to neutral or phase to earth, this is your normal domestic supply, the three phase 415v i.e 415V between any two of the three phases is normally used for heavier loads, such as industrial supplies.
The other voltages that you use are not in common use in this country except maybe when you use a separate transformer to drop the voltage to 110V for greater safety when using power tools. |

Residential services in the states are 110/220... this can fluctuate 110-115-120 volts. The 277/480 is used in commercial and industrial applications here. Power = Voltage x Current , therefore you can get more power with the same amount of current with the higher voltages. ie... 277V Lighting circuits can hold more lights on a 20A circuit.
