I have a 220V 50A single phase circuit from a 2 pole GFI breaker (in the main house panel ). I've disconnected an old spa (outside) and am installing a new one. I've installed a sub panel with a GFI breaker next to the new spa. Should I remove the GFI breaker from the main panel and replace it with a standard 50A breaker? I've also installed a 15 amp GFI outlet on the patio and when I energize the circuit, it trips the GFI breaker in the main panel. I have not hooked up the new spa yet. All wiring is correct. Is the GFI breaker the culprit? Will the new spa trip the main breaker also?

Thanks

Is the 15A GFI taken from part of the old circuitry for the spa? Sounds like there is a ground fault somewhere in that circuit.

The GFI outlet runs from a breaker in the new subpanel along with the new GFI spa breaker. I have not energized the spa circuit yet. Wiring is all new except for line from Main panel GFI breaker, which worked fine with the old spa. Wire- #8 3 wire with ground, about 6 years old.

The wire size is not the culprit here... sounds like you have a ground fault. Check to make sure the wiring in the gfi outlet is not touching anywhere and that there is not any worn places on the insulation. Does the problem still exist if you remove the device from the circuit?
