hi whats the first course I need to take to get me started towards a qualified electrician.

How long does it take

It depends where you are...
Here you need a contractor to work under and schooling... Most apprenticeships are approximately 5yrs to finish and then you have to pass a licensing test to be a journeyman electrician.

Hi, Im in northwest england.

The only problem is I`m 26 - too old for an apprenticeship Sad

Theres no support for older people.

Most technical colleges run the 236 course on day release and you work for a company for the rest of the time wihile training. I employ one chap who is 52yrs old and is doing just that.
I find the more mature the student the better they learn and turn out in the end.
