My husband and I just moved into a 1950 house a few weeks ago. The first floor and the basement are one heating zone, and the second floor is on another zone for heat. The basement is half finished with baseboard heat and the other half is unfinished. The basement gets very warm, on both sides, and we feel a lot of heat is being wasted because we don't go downstairs often.

While consulting a plumber about adding another zone in the basement, he recommended that we instead insulate the pipes. He said that would make a big difference and be more cost-effective that adding a zone. Another plumber said not to insulate.....that it wouldn't really help.

Any advice??????
