Hi, I'm thinking of fitting an electric fire at home. How are they wired in? Straight to consumer unit or to a socket?

If to a consumer unit, what fuse rating would be required for a 1-2kw fire.

I'm no expert but ok wiring lights, etc...would it be ok for me to do this myself? or do I get a sparky in?

Thanks in advance

It depends on the type of fire you want to fit.
1Kw = Approx 4amp
2Kw = Approx 8amp
Both would be fine fed from a fused spur from the existing ring main.
If you want to go back to the fuse board on a radial circuit then I would fit a 16amp breaker and run 2.5mm twin+earth to a fused spur, then connect the fire( fusing it at the correct rating in the spur)
