I have just been out and purchased one.

Digital LCD display: - DC Volt Measure upto 1000V, AC Volt Measure, DC Current, AC Current, Resistance, Diode, Transistor and audible continuity test

One thing however. The instructions are naff and i really cant get to the bottom of it.

I have rigged up a little lighting circuit. Everything works fine on the circuit. From Mains to Sw FCU then into each light only 3 x 50w. Now i just wanted to know how to continuity test things etc.

Continuity test is easy.
Connect 1 end of your tester to a cable and the other tester clip to the other and then if the cable is continuios the tester will either beep or light up.
if you test between two cores of a cable and the buzzer sounds, then you either have a load connected at the other end or you have a short circuit in the cable.

My multimeter continuity test sends audible signal when continuity is present. You can test your multimeter by putting your leads together... this will create continuity and you should hear a signal, or it will do whatever it is supposed to do when you have continuity. Continuity means that the wire is continuous... you have both ends of the same wire or it is connected together.

Great that has explained things excellently for me.

One other question though.

if you have got a lighting circuit in a room that isn't connected to the consumer unit, but you want to make sure that all is well. What specific test would you do, with the multimeter. Would you test the switch cable with the light cable etc.

i would use an insulation tester not a multi-meter.
a insulation tester pumps 500-1000v along the cables to test the insulation and cable integrity.
