|
|
I am installing a hot tub, problem 1 my breaker box is full, problem 2, I am being told that there are no piggy back breakers for this box. Problem 3 I am being told that a 100 amp breaker will not work in this box to run a sub panel. Problem 4, the kill switch is located in the Panel therefore being told can not change the box out for a more current one without contacting the Electrical Company to cut off the power and an inspector to verify
My box is a Crouse Hines, it is about 15 years old |

What is the main breaker size in your panel, how many circuits in the panel? They do make a hot tub kit specifically for installing spas... but you need the room in the main panel to run the line. You need the hot tub panel to be within view of the hot tub to act as a disconnect means for servicing the tub. Depending on the amperage rating of the main panel, you may be able to install a subpanel.

the breaker box is full, there are 20 spots, the largest being an 80 amp, the main breaker is a 200 amp,
I am being told by my brother that we need to do a sub panel, than I want the breaker box for the hot tub by the Spa which will be feed by a subpanel
Can he use a 100amp breaker, in this box, without problem, which brand |

If you are unable to get a breaker the same brand as your panel... the wholesale electrical house in your area will be able to tell you what is compatible with your existing box. It doesn't matter what 'brand' you use for the subpanel, just have to make sure the breaker you install in the old box for the new subpanel is compatible so that it fits in properly. Get the new subpanel with plenty of circuits so you have room for some spares for any new projects you decide to do. You will have to move some of the existing circuits to the new subpanel to get everything to fit. 200A should be plenty of power for you to run the house. There has to be a shut off in view of the hot tub, which is where the kit comes in. Be certain to follow all the grounding rules. Sounds like you will be having fun in your new tub soon!
