'Big Ends'

I have had some problems with the BWM 318i since i bought it second hand last August

Now as far as I can see this could be the end of the road.....

Its an R Reg auto 1.7

I had to get the RAC out as the car was making loud banging noises on start up (and worse when revved)
I have been told this is most probably the 'big ends' on the engine

Can anyone explain my options ?

Many thanks
James

Re: 'Big Ends'

Basically the 'big ends' refers to the end of the connecting rods where they fit around the crankshaft.

Several causes, worn bearing shells or crankshaft or distorted bearing caps are what immediatly come to mind.

Whatever choices now are to either drop the sump and check bearing shells and if necessary replace them might be the cheapest solution and may be all that is required. Other alternative is to replace engine.

Re: 'Big Ends'

Thanks Alen

Obvioulsy replacing the engine is somethig I would like to avoid due to the cost
I am not very mechanic minded at all... RAC have told me they will tow me up to 10miles from my home

What would be the cost if bearing shells are all that is required ?

So best bet is take it to a mechanic and see what there opinion is it take it

Cheers

Too many variables to take into account.

Take vehicle to a recomended independant and it will be cheaper than the big boys thats for certain though.

Re: 'Big Ends'

Thanks for the above Alan
Due to other restrictions I havent really been able to do much about the car till now

However....
A friend of mine has taken a look (well more like a listen) to the engine
And he believes it to be the 'Top Ends' not the 'Big Ends' as I was previously told

Can anyone advise if...
This increases or decreased the price of any repairs ?
Does this confirm a right off to the car ?
Any options I may have ?

Many thanks and any advise would be greatly appreciated
Regards
James
