Battery Bank Query (series/parallel AA rechargables)

Hi,
I'd just like to check my calculation with someone as to linking a chain of AA 1.2v 2900mah nimh batteries together to see if my (lousy) maths skills are accurate for once.

I'd like to create a 14.4v battery, with as much mah as I can get.

If I have read the information on the web correctly, to create this you need to connect the batteries in both series and parallel, and from the pictures I've seen on the web to provide both the voltage and the current you need double the amount of batteries, one set to get the voltage, and one set to get the mah.

If I understand it, this would mean to get the 14.4v I would need 12 batteries, and to make up the current I would need yet a further 12 batteries, which would only provide 5800mah, making a grand total of 24 batteries.

Am I correct or has my calculation gone wrong somewhere?

Thanks,
Chief :)
