Gutter Downpipe Required?

Hi All,

I hope you can help with my problem?

I was up on my roof yesterday clearing a gutter blockage on my upstairs extension that was constantly dripping, and while clearing that one I noticed that the main gutter of the house was also full of muck. I cleared a bucket & a half out & then flushed it with water....it didn't move! It just sat there in the metal gutter. It looks like tin. This is a concealed gutter hiding behind facia boards. Then the water started dripping out from under the facia boards right onto the flat roof I was standing on....Now I'm thinking that the first gutter I cleared was not the only reason my wall is soaked & going green!
All the other houses have down-pipes, but because whoever built my extension cut through this gutter, it's not been replaced by anything and the water has nowhere to go.
What I'd like to know is can I cut into this gutter easily with a hole saw and install a downpipe? That's the only solution I can think of.
Put in the downpipe & seal it?
I've also got loads of mould on the bathroom ceiling, which I'm not starting to think is being caused by a constantly wet wall....
Please help!
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks
Roy :)

Re: Gutter Downpipe Required?

Water entering a gutter needs somewhere to go - end of!!

How you solve this might not be so easy. If it 'looks like tin' as you say itis probably alluminium which can be cut with a hole saw but you still need a fitting in the hole to channel the water into gutter. Not being able to see the situation it's a bit hard to visualise.

May be you could adapt a basin waste outlet to fit or a large tank connector, make the hole then from inside gutter sort of hammer the edges of the hole down to form a chamfer to avoid a ridge at the outlet. I cannot think of a purpose made, easily obtainable, fitting off the top of head. Someone else might.
Please don't send Personal Messages outlining a problem - that is what the forum is for!

Re: Gutter Downpipe Required?

Thank you Alan.
Always good to get someone else's opinion. The basin waste Idea seems like a good option to me, so will probably try that.

Thanks.
