Shower/bath screen

Hi.
I am fitting a shower screen to my bath and there's one point that I'm not sure about.
It's a two part screen - the first part is fixed and the second is hinged, allowing it to 'swing both ways' .
My question - is the fixed part of the screen supposed to actually sit on the bath or is it okay to sit a few millimetres above the bath, relying on the wall fixings to hold it securely?
(I'm worried about there being inevitable movement when it rests on the bath, resulting in a scratched bath surface.)
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Paul.
